The UN World Trade Organization projects that travel will recover 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Looking ahead to 2032, the sector is expected to grow an average of 5.8% annually, outpacing the growth of the overall economy.
As travelers who care about climate, this translates into an incredible opportunity. There were 900 million of us in 2022; with millions more on the horizon, there’s no doubt that travel represents a potentially massive force for climate.
Tomorrow’s Air, ATTA’s flagship climate initiative, invites us to imagine and then act on the vision of the impact we could have if we were to mobilize millions of international travelers and businesses to travel climate-conscious and support climate-stabilizing technologies alongside emissions reductions and nature conservation.
Tomorrow’s Air tracks impact in four categories: community, education, investment, and action. The 2022 impact report shares information about the initiative’s recent progress and where the collective is heading. Key highlights include:
- The Tomorrow’s Air community, led by online travel agency Kimkim, ordered 147t of carbon dioxide for removal and permanent storage
- 10,262 travelers contributed funding
- 69% of the Tomorrow’s Air community say they change travel plans based on emissions information when that information is available
- 29% adapt meals to emphasize foods with a lower carbon footprint
