A new report focused on the global carbon removal imperative—the first of its kind and led by the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment—was released January 18, 2023.

The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal” highlights an important fact: that almost all scenarios for keeping earth’s warming below 1.5 degrees require what is termed “novel” carbon removal methods. These include examples such as direct air capture, biochar, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. (Learn more about these terms at American University’s Carbon Removal Law and Policy Center’s Carbon Removal Glossary).

Despite this fact, the majority of carbon removal today continues to occur through afforestation and reforestation projects.

While participation in novel approaches is experiencing fast growth (an increase of 533% between 2021 and 2022, by one estimate), very few countries have published proposals for scaling up carbon removal alongside aggressive emissions reductions and support for nature-based solutions.

For travel businesses interested in supporting the scale up of novel approaches to carbon removal, Tomorrow’s Air, an initiative incubated by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, offers an easy on-ramp. Contact [email protected].
